Responding to the Prime Minister’s address to the nation, Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner says that in her desperation to keep her party together she is ignoring the majority of the population and gambling with the country’s future:

“Theresa May forgets that in 2017, she called a General Election, urging the country to give her a strong mandate. She was refused this mandate, which is why we have arrived at the situation we are in today.“

“She speaks of “the people“ as if they are only the 17million who voted to leave the European Union. We are a country of 65 million – the overwhelming majority have been consistently ignored by her. 48% of those who voted in the referendum voted for something clear and deliverable – being part of the European Union. The 52% covered many wildly different versions of Brexit, which still have not been resolved.“

“I have been saying for many months that we should revoke Article 50. If not that, then at least there should be a public vote on whether to accept these arrangements that are so different to what was promised back in 2016, or keep the status quo, as a member of the European Union. If we revoke Article 50, those who want to leave the European Union should use the next period to sort out exactly what it is they are suggesting and propose that at a General Election. In the meantime, the Prime Minister needs to recognise that continuing on this reckless path is a huge gamble with our country’s future.”
