Liz Truss was elected Leader of the Conservative Party in an expected victory over Rishi Sunak, beating the former Chancellor with 81,326 votes to his 60,399. Truss was elected PM with the approximate equivalent of just 0.25% of the votes cast in the last General Election.

Commenting, Daniel Zeichner MP said: ‘We have a new Prime Minister, but not one chosen by the British people. Liz Truss only had the support of 50 of her colleagues at the beginning of this process – that means over 300 Conservative MPs didn’t support her. That’s why we should have a General Election.

But before that, Truss should commit to freeze the bills this winter, just as Labour have been demanding. That’s the reassurance the people need to get through the next few months.

Freeze the bills.
